Tenuta San Giorgio
Tenuta San Giorgio is a project entirely dedicated to Sangiovese, the signature grape variety of Montalcino. Founded in 1946 as a traditional farm estate, the property began a structured winemaking journey in the 1980s with the release of its first Brunello labels. In 2000, “Ugolforte” was introduced, today the estate’s flagship wine and the purest expression of its style. Since 2016, the estate has been part of ColleMassari Estates, led by Claudio Tipa and Maria Iris Tipa Bertarelli, strengthening a vision focused on enhancing the estate’s individual crus and fully expressing the character of the territory. Today, the estate covers 142 hectares, of which 25 are planted exclusively with Sangiovese.
Vineyard management at Tenuta San Giorgio follows the principles of certified organic farming and is based on low yields and careful manual selection of the grape clusters. The vineyards, trained using the spur cordon system, are rooted in remarkably varied soils where clay, galestro, and tuff alternate gradually. The plots benefit from a microclimate influenced by the presence of Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano that dominates the Val d’Orcia and creates temperature variations favorable to the balanced ripening of the grapes. The vineyards extend between 190 and 440 meters along the south-eastern ridge of the Montalcino hill, in a landscape surrounded by 110 hectares of woodland and olive groves that protect the vines and contribute to a harmonious ecosystem.
In the cellar, Tenuta San Giorgio carries out slow fermentations in concrete and oak, followed by long aging in large Slavonian oak casks, a choice that defines a style that is both essential and deeply rooted in tradition. The wines express a powerful yet refined Sangiovese, fresh and elegant, capable of interpreting the territory through different expressions. Ugolforte presents Brunello with depth, firm tannic structure, and a savory tension. Rosso di Montalcino emphasizes fragrance and immediacy while maintaining structure. In every label, aromatic clarity, vibrant energy, and a distinct mineral identity emerge, direct reflections of the complexity of the soils in one of the most naturally suited areas for viticulture.
