Tenuta del Vallone Rosso
Tenuta del Vallone Rosso was founded in Biancavilla, on the south-western slope of Mount Etna, in the heart of the Etna Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Established in 2021 by Gianluca Furnari, the estate represents the rebirth of a family legacy rooted in more than eighty years of farming history. It was Grandfather Puddu who planted the first rows of Nerello Mascalese and Carricante, later cared for by uncles Alfredo and Agatino. Today the estate covers nearly three hectares spread across the contrade of Minicucchita, Montalto, Boschetto, and Verginella, between 780 and 1080 meters above sea level. It is a family story that brings together respect for nature and ancient knowledge passed down through generations.
The vineyard philosophy of Tenuta del Vallone Rosso is based on respect for the “Muntagna”—the name used by those who live on its slopes to refer to Mount Etna—and on the enhancement of native grape varieties. The vineyards are trained in the traditional Etna bush-vine system (alberello etneo) and are planted on their own roots, supported by chestnut stakes driven into the sciare laviche, the typical sandy soils rich in minerals and volcanic ash. In Contrada Boschetto, vines that reach up to 150 years of age still survive, some pre-phylloxera, offering rare testimony to Etna’s historic viticulture. Wide day-night temperature variations, evening winds, and altitude shape the character of the grapes and enhance their aromatic richness, while the manual care of the vineyards preserves the biodiversity of the local flora and fauna. It is an agricultural practice that protects century-old vines and interprets an ancient territory with consistency and respect.
In the cellar, Tenuta del Vallone Rosso uses stainless steel for alcoholic fermentations, seeking clarity and precision of expression. The wines display tension, finesse, and deep mineral character. Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio offer profiles of small red berries, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle spicy notes, supported by firm tannic structures and vibrant freshness. Carricante and other white varieties reveal aromas of citrus, delicate flowers, and a distinct saline character. These wines embody the volcanic soul of Etna’s viticulture.
