The Segundo “Etiqueta Azul” by Endemic is a red that speaks Spanish and will tell you all about the warmth, the celebration, and the tradition of this wonderful territory. The Endemic project was born from the desire of three brothers, Raúl, Pedro Pablo, and Miguel Ángel, to keep intact the old vines that surround their hometown, Jaraguas in the inland of Valencia, and to pass it on to those who will come after them. Taking care of the vine here is not easy: viticulture is practiced on a plateau at about 700 meters above sea level, the temperatures between winter and summer change drastically, and the quantities produced by the plants are really low.
“Etiqueta Azul” Segundo is the interpretation that Endemic makes of pure Tempranillo, locally known here as Cencibel. The low-trained vines were planted in 1972, they are surrounded by the wildest nature of this corner of Spain and sink their roots into calcareous soils rich in clay and sand, generally poor in organic matter. All operations in the vineyard are carried out by hand, and once in the winery, they are left to ferment with indigenous yeasts with long maceration on the skins. The aging takes place in French and American oak barrels and lasts at least 9 months, after which the wine rests for a while in the bottle.
The Segundo “Etiqueta Azul” by Endemic is a straightforward Spanish red, frank and viscerally linked to the rugged and authentic habitat of the Utiel-Requena region, near Valencia. The color is intense garnet red, and by swirling the glass, you can observe the legs slowly descending on the walls of the glass. Bringing your nose close to the glass, you will certainly catch clear hints of small red fruits like currants, cherries and raspberries, and perhaps in the background, you might sense some smoky echoes. It presents a medium structure on the palate, soft and persistent, with a well-integrated tannin and a long freshness. Are you ready to travel?
