Sagrantino di Montefalco Fongoli 2019
Artisanal
Organic and biodynamicThe Sagrantino from Montefalco by the Fongoli winery is elegant and balanced, with a typical aromatic profile and a well-integrated tannic structure. After aging for over 30 months in large barrels, it expresses itself with aromas of berries and cherries in jams, graphite, and underbrush, and with an intense, warm, soft, harmonious, and persistent taste.
The Sagrantino di Montefalco by Fongoli harmoniously combines richness of fruit and finesse, standing out as a great red with an enviable quality/price ratio. The "base" Sagrantino from Cantina Fongoli, located in the heart of the Montefalco area, is much more than an entry-level wine; it is a liquid that surprises and satisfies due to a particularly successful and well-executed interpretation. The winery, now in its fourth generation of family ownership, steadfastly continues its choice to produce artisanal reds, banning chemicals from the vineyard and ensuring that healthy grapes ferment spontaneously. The focus is on local indigenous varieties such as Sagrantino, Grechetto, and Trebbiano Spoletino, alongside others that have adapted perfectly to the area like Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. High emotional content territorial expressions.
The red Sagrantino di Montefalco is obtained from pure grapes of the homonymous vine coming from vineyards located on clayey soils with a southern and southwestern exposure. All steps are carried out in full respect of nature and the territory, therefore in the vineyard the principles of organic farming are followed, integrated with some from biodynamics, and then the manual harvesting of the bunches and spontaneous fermentation are carried out consistently, with post-fermentation maceration lasting 10 days in open tanks. The wine ages for at least 30 months in large Slavonian oak barrels of varying ages, without undergoing any clarification or filtration.
The Fongoli Sagrantino di Montefalco presents itself in the glass with a deep ruby red color, edged with garnet reflections. Rich and "dark" nose, unfolding with notes of berry jam, leather, cocoa, and earthy touches. Then there are the spices that recall clove and cinnamon. A wine of great structure and power, whose intensity is confirmed by the tasting. A rich red that coats the palate thanks to a smooth and sweet tannin, but what impresses the most is the long retro-nasal persistence, truly surprising. A great expression given its decidedly unbalanced quality-price ratio towards the former!
