The custom of preparing elixirs and herbal liqueurs has ancient medieval origins. Monasteries can boast a long experience in the knowledge of botanicals and their characteristics. Born as infusions with medicinal and restorative properties, herbal liqueurs have then transformed into digestifs. Within the monastery of Santa Maria Novella, the Dominican monks have always selected herbs, plants, roots, and spices for their artisanal preparations, and it is from this ancient tradition that a label still very successful today was born.
The Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella Liquore Mediceo, already in the chosen name, indicates the strong and indissoluble bond with Florence. The monks settled in the city in the distant 1221 and since that date have always been part of the community, as an important religious reference point and a well-known artisan laboratory of essences.and preparations based on flowers and herbs from the territory. As from the oldest practices, carefully passed down from generation to generation, the liqueur is still made today with a selection of 10 herbs, plants, spices, roots, and barks, including marjoram and lemon balm. The botanicals are infused in alcohol to enhance the extraction of aromas. At the end of the maceration, the infusion is filtered, added with water to lower the alcohol content, and slightly sweetened to mitigate the bitter notes of the herbs.
