Cyclades 'Potamisi' Tranampelo 2022
Unusual grapesTranampelo's Cyclades 'Potamisi' is a white wine made from a valuable native Cycladic grape variety, Potamisi. Productive and capable of producing structured wines, Potamisi is always used in blends, so produced alone it is a true enological rarity. Citrusy, with intriguing hints of saltiness and green aromas of fennel and green pepper, from the first sip it is pleasant, not particularly demanding and with great energy. Fresh, balsamic and very taut, the saline finish convinces particularly in pairings with fish or fresh cheeses such as Feta
The ‘Potamisi’ Cyclades from the Greek winery Tranampelo represents a dry and saline expression of the fascinating wine territory of the Cyclades islands. It is an interpretation of pure Potamisi grapes, an indigenous white grape variety that usually tends to produce wines rich in organic acids and with a good alcohol content. It is one of the main grape varieties on the island of Naxos, usually used in blends with other grapes, which is why its vinification in purity represents a rare oenological gem.
Tranampelo ‘Potamisi’ Cyclades is produced with only Potamisi from a selection of grapes grown in accordance with the principles of organic farming within vineyards located around the village of Glinado, on the western side of the island of Naxos. In particular, the vines were planted about 15 years ago on sandy-clay soils, also characterized by a high concentration of decomposed granite. The hand-picked clusters are first subjected to a brief cold maceration, followed by soft pressing and spontaneous alcoholic fermentation of the must in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The subsequent aging phase, which takes place on the fine lees, also occurs in steel, containers in which the wine rests for about 8 months until the final bottling.
The Cyclades ‘Potamisi’ by Tranampelo has a bright straw-yellow color. Intense and alluring is the nose with its aromas of orange blossoms, peach, and white pepper that blend with hints of sage and fennel and with iodized notes evocative of the territory of Naxos. The tasting is clear and fresh, tense and very vibrant, with a medium complexity finish that echoes persistent balsamic and saline sensations.
